‘Marcus Lafond’ writes to us
The Good Oil
In March 2008 we received an email from someone using the name ‘Marcus Lafond’, who claimed to have undertaken an education at Northeastern University in the USA. ‘Mr Lafond’ claims to have expended $US16,000 because of our ‘insane rating’ of his initial choice. (As of this writing, $US16,000 is worth perhaps two Big Macs and a nice time in Amsterdam).

Of course, we have no idea if ‘Marcus Lafond’ exists, or if the author is or was a student at Northeastern University or Harvard. We have no protection against imposture. The emailer sent from the address malafond@hotmail.com, [IP address 24.218.109.139, registered to Comcast Cable Communications Holdings, Boston. Our return email was rejected by the postmaster.]
In the following months we have received several emails from the address malafond@hotmail.com, stating variously that (a) Mr Lafond does not exist, (b) my room-mate sent the email without my knowledge, (c) someone called John Doe sent the email and (d) I am going to sue you (whoever ‘I’ is). The sender also feigns surprise at his email being published on this site. As we state very clearly on our contact page, and in the footer of each and every page on our site, all correspondents agree to place their emails into the public domain.
We are completely confused. Some emails from the address claim to be legitimate emails from a real person, including the ones that want to sue us. Other emails claim that the email address has been used fraudulently. Our emailer claims to be a student at Harvard, but our advice from the registrar at the Harvard Graduate School of Design is that no one with the name ‘Marcus Lafond’ has been or is registered.
We don't know what to think! Frankly, we are hoping that a smart lawyer's lettter will sort it all out. Of course, we will be publishing that letter here.
You can read our response to ‘Mr Lafond’ here.

Please re-examine you methodology for ranking schools.
[Very serious complaints against Northeastern University deleted. They may well be justified, but we need to get the other side of the story first.]
Why don’t you do a little research before you make students excited about a particular program.
I wasted $16,000 on this Joke of a “school of architecture” because of your insane ranking.
Seriously, your method of ranking is a joke!
It has no credibility!
I should sue you for misinformation and demand the cost of my tuition back!
You’ll be hearing from my lawyer!
